Hundreds of local and regional arts festivals for young people take place across the UK each year, which include dance festivals. The national dance festival is organised by All England Dance where you can see the full list of festivals.
Festivals are usually run by volunteers and last for a few weeks. Dancers will perform in their age/style category and be judged by an examiner from a UK leading dance faculty. All dancers receive a certificate, mark & feedback. The categories include modern and traditional dance styles such as ballet, modern, tap, character.
Dancers are invited to enter their solos, duets and trios as well as own choreography for local dance festivals listed below. Parents will need to attend with their dancer and get them ready backstage to compete. Teachers will manage the group sections, but will likely not be there to watch solo/duo/trios as the festivals can go on for a few weeks.
Make sure you stay up to date with entry dates below and enter straight away as they are often very busy.
WHO DOES ENTRIES?
BDA does all the group entries for the school, but parents must do their own entries for solo/duo/trios. In 2022 we plan to do Sussex & Eastbourne Festival for groups only but dancers can perform their solo/duo/trio at any of the suggested festivals below. Please ask a teacher what genre category to enter and make sure you let us know what you have entered so we can plan in lessons to help you prepare.

We may be taking part in the All England Regional Finals in Sussex (The Hawth, 2022 May-June) depending on qualifying results.
Dance Competitions have become more popular in the UK and are inspired by the American dance competition scene. Competitions usually take place over one or two days. Often the dance categories are more modern, with more focus on contemporary, jazz and lyrical styles, as well as having categories for styles like acro, tap & ballet. There are usually three judges who may be acclaimed dancers, dance professionals or teachers. They will record live audio feedback throughout each performance that dancers can listen to afterwards.
Awards often include top scores of the day, or title winners, and there may also be audition/knockout rounds. All categories are usually judged at one big ceremony at the end of the day.
WHO DOES ENTRIES?
BDA enters all dance competitions on behalf of our dancers including for all solos, duets and trios. As these can be very expensive, we plan to only take our elite/ advanced dancers to some of these events who would benefit from having some strong competition.
