About Us

Brooks Dance Academy was founded in 1995 under its original name The Shoreham School of Dance by ex-professional dancer and Arts Ed graduate Jacqueline Brooks (ISTD CDE Dip). The school celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2020, and is now a successful, dynamic dance academy with its own studio space in Lancing, West Sussex, a stones throw away from the beautiful Sussex coastline. Brooks is also currently part-based at a new state-of-the-art dance studios at Sir Robert Woodard Academy, Lancing.

We offer a full timetable of classes in all styles for children aged 4 & up in all dance styles, as well as running a high-achieving competitive & elite dance programme for all those who want to enjoy an exciting hobby in dance. Many of our students perform and compete at local dance competitions or festivals, and many students perform in our bi-annual show. Our most recent show in 2019 was held at The Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts at Sussex University campus in Brighton.

The school offers ISTD syllabus classes in core styles such as Ballet & Tap, as well as a bespoke dance programmes in styles such as Jazz, Contemporary, Street, Commercial, Lyrical and Acro. Along with ISTD, other syllabi our teachers work with also includes: Acrobatic Arts, Alixa Flexibility, Progressing Ballet Technique, British Ballet Organisation & Rambert Grades.

At BDA we value creativity, dedication, discipline, joy & self-expression.

A rewarding hobby, or a potential career

We believe the discipline of traditional Ballet is very important. We encourage all dancers to start training in ballet, as well as modern and tap from the age of 3/4. As students get older we offer additional classes in Jazz, Acro, Contemporary, Lyrical, Street and dancers who show potential may be invited to join our Troupe/Companies that take part in extra training at weekends. Most of our pupils train in dance with us between 3–10 hours a week.

Joining the school

New students can benefit from a week-long free trial before signing up for a term. We prioritise places at the school for dancers who want to take 3 or more classes a week and who show adequate level of commitment to the school. We believe we offer a comprehensive timetable, most suited to those who are interested in pursuing dance as a career, or who wish to train to an excellent standard.

Distinctive style and unique training

We strive to teach our dancers expressive and creative choreography, explore modern dance disciplines and encourage dancers to be unique. We have been described by dance adjudicators as quirky, unique, distinctive and classy, and we feel that this sums us up perfectly.

Dance courses and pre-vocational programmes our students have gone on to include:

Rambert Pre-Vocational, Central School of Ballet Associates, London School of Russian Ballet, Royal Ballet Summer School, Sol Dans Company, Wilkes Academy, Performers Elite Pre-Vocational, Ceyda Tanc Youth Dance, English National Ballet Youth, CAT at The Place, Chichester University, Roehampton University & Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
