About Brooks Dance Academy
Following a recent announcement on 2nd July, we now plan to commence a summer training programme for our troupe students from mid-July. All troupe dancers can enquire about spaces for private lessons, duo/trio lessons, or small group training opportunities that will take place over the summer. This includes students invited to join our troupe from Sep 2020. We plan to return to a new timetable starting on 13th September 2020 for all our students, including recreational classes. All students who would like a place at the school from September will need to fill out a registration form before 22nd July to secure a place. We expect to come back differently to before and need to plan our timetable effectively for all our students who will be returning to training. The link will be available on our website soon.
Brooks Dance Academy, formerly The Shoreham School of Dance, was founded by Arts Ed graduate and ex-professional dancer Jacqueline Brooks (ISTD CDE) in 1995, who in recent years has formed a dynamic duo with her eldest daughter Lucy Brooks (Masters in Drama & Theatre). BROOKS is a thriving dance school, based in our own purpose-built dance studio in Lancing West Sussex, as well as hired spaces in Shoreham-by-sea and Southwick, with a full timetable of classes in all styles. We also run a successful competition team and elite training options for those wanting a career or an exciting hobby in dance.
The school provides ISTD syllabus and bespoke dance training with fantastic exam results in Modern, Tap & Ballet, as well as teaching styles such as Contemporary, Street, Commercial, Lyrical, Jazz and Acro. Students perform and compete at local dance competitions & festivals and the whole school performs in our bi-annual show. In 2019 this was held at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts in Brighton.
A rewarding hobby, or a potential career
Our dancers are defined by their excellent technique, and we believe the discipline of traditional Ballet is very important. We encourage all dancers to start training in ballet, as well as modern and tap from the age of 3/4. As students get older we offer additional classes in Acro, Contemporary, Lyrical, Street, and dancers who show potential may be invited to join our troupe teams that take part in extra training at weekends, and perform and compete locally.
Joining the school
New students can benefit from a week-long free trial before signing up for a term. Dancers over 10 years old who have only done gymnastics or have little dance experience must now audition to join the school. This is so we can check to see if we think the student will be capable of catching up with our students, and to ensure they have the right level of commitment. We prioritise places at the school for dancers who want to take 3 or more classes a week.
Distinctive style and unique training
We strive to teach our dancers expressive and creative choreography, explore modern dance disciplines and encourage dancers to be unique. We have been described by dance adjudicators as quirky, unique, distinctive and classy, and we feel that this sums us up perfectly.
In 2018, our senior dancers worked with our troupe choreographer Miss Lucy to put together a music video piece to Cocoon by local recording artist Emma Gatrill. Here's the final result, filmed & edited by Chris Lucraft...
